Have you noticed that you have rusty hot water coming from your taps?
If this happens the first thing to do is check the age of your tank. A well-maintained water heater should have a typical lifespan from 10 to 15 years.
If your hot water tank is close to this age and has any of the following issues it most likely means your tank is on its way out:
- Water temperature fluctuations
- Heavy sediment or dirt deposits
- Strange banging noises
- Visible corrosion on the bottom of the tank
- Pooling water underneath the tank
- Takes too long to heat the water
- Rusty hot water
Is your tank younger than this? Say between 8-10yrs old? If yes; have you had your tank serviced regularly? If no and your tank is having any of the above issues, your tank potentially could be on the way out also I'm afraid to say.

If you are wanting to get even more life out of your hot water tank than the standard 10-15 years maybe you should consider installing a stainless steel tank. Stainless steel tanks have proven to have a life expectancy of 15-25 years depending on the quality of the tank you install. Plus you can save money on servicing your tank since stainless steel tanks do not have sacrificial anodes. These tanks generally come with a 12-15 year warranty depending on the brand.
