Heat Pump Hot Water

Heat pump hot water systems can reduce the electricity used for water heating by transferring heat from outdoor air. They work like a reverse air conditioner, extracting heat from the surrounding air to warm your water. With government rebates available, upgrading to a heat pump can lower your hot water running costs over its lifetime. With hundreds of heat pump installations across the Northern Beaches, we can recommend the perfect unit for your household. As a Reclaim recommended installer listed on their website, we’re trusted by one of Australia’s leading heat pump manufacturers to deliver quality installations.

How a Reclaim heat pump heats your water

This is a Reclaim CO2 split system we installed on the Northern Beaches. Pick what's happening, then step through it. The coloured lines show where the air, refrigerant and water go, and the tags show roughly how hot each part runs.

The whole system in 3D

This is the split system we install most often: the outdoor unit on the left, the storage tank on the right. The colours show what is hot and what is cold while it runs, and they mean the same as on the photo diagram above.

  • Cold water
  • Hot water
  • Warm or mixed water
  • CO2 refrigerant, cold
  • CO2 refrigerant, hot (compressor to water heat exchanger)
  • Outside air in
  • Cooler air out

  1. Air in

The fan draws outside air in through the back and side of the outdoor unit and across a finned coil. The air leaves through the front, cooler than it went in.

  2. The CO2 picks up heat

Inside the coil the CO2 refrigerant runs colder than the outside air, so it takes heat from the air.

  3. The compressor

The compressor squeezes the CO2 gas. Raising the pressure makes it very hot.

  4. Heat into the water

The hot CO2 spirals down through the water heat exchanger while tank water runs up through it the other way. The water comes out hot in a single pass, and the CO2 comes out cooled right down, only a few degrees warmer than the water going in.

  5. Back into the tank

The unit's pump draws cold water from the bottom of the tank and returns it hot at the top, so the tank fills with hot water from the top down.

  6. Round again

The expansion valve drops the pressure of the cooled CO2, which makes it colder than the outside air, and it heads back to the coil. Your hot taps draw from the top of the tank through a tempering valve, and cold mains tops the tank up at the bottom.
