Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question about hot water systems, heat pumps, or our services? We've answered the most common ones below. If you can't find what you're looking for, give us a call.
🔥Heat Pump Hot Water
A heat pump works like a reverse air conditioner — it pulls warmth from the surrounding air and uses it to heat your water. It uses a refrigerant cycle and a compressor to transfer that heat into your hot water tank. Because it's moving heat rather than generating it from scratch, a heat pump uses around a third of the electricity of a traditional electric hot water system. They're one of the most efficient ways to heat water, and they're becoming the go-to replacement for old electric and gas systems across Sydney. Learn more on our heat pump page.
Costs depend on household demand, the system, tariff and whether gas is still needed for other appliances. Our running cost calculator shows dated reference rates and adjustable assumptions. Its gas-only comparison includes supply charges once. It is an illustration, not a bill prediction or installation quote.
Yes, there are government rebate programs available in NSW that can help reduce the upfront cost of a heat pump installation. Rebate amounts and eligibility can change, so it's best to give us a call on 0448 581 325 and we can walk you through what's currently available for your situation.
Heat pumps can operate in winter within the model’s specified range. Colder air generally changes efficiency and recovery time. Some models have an electric backup element and others do not; capacity and controls need to suit your household and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Fan and compressor noise depends on the model and its installation. A published decibel figure is not proof that a site complies with noise rules. We assess airflow, windows, reflecting surfaces and neighbours; model-specific placement and operating times matter.
🔵Gas Hot Water
Gas storage keeps a tank hot. Continuous flow heats water as a tap is used, avoiding tank standing losses, but has a maximum delivery rate at the required temperature rise. Compare household demand, available gas supply and total running cost. Read our gas hot water page.
It depends on your situation, but for many homes the answer is yes. Heat pumps are usually cheaper to run, produce fewer emissions, and with available rebates the upfront cost can be very competitive. If your gas system is reaching end of life (10–15 years old), it's a great time to consider making the switch. We can assess your setup and give you an honest recommendation — call us on 0448 581 325 for a free quote.
If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter only if it is safe to approach. Do not use switches, flames or attempt to relight the appliance. Move away and call us on 0448 581 325 from a safe location. Do not wait for a website or chatbot response.
⚡Electric Hot Water
Many storage systems can use a controlled-load tariff where the meter, network supply hours and manufacturer requirements allow it. Supply is not necessarily overnight only. Ask your retailer and installer to check eligibility, tank capacity and recovery. See our electric hot water page.
Rumbling, popping, or banging noises from your electric hot water system usually mean there's sediment build-up in the tank. This is common in older systems and can reduce efficiency and lifespan. It could also indicate a failing element. Don't ignore it — give us a call on 0448 581 325 and we'll diagnose the issue before it turns into a bigger problem.
☀️Solar Hot Water
Solar thermal collectors absorb solar radiation to heat water. Cloud cover reduces available energy, so an electric or gas booster may be needed. Booster operation, stored capacity and recovery determine supply; no system guarantees unlimited hot water. Solar thermal collectors are different from PV electricity panels. See our solar hot water page.
Electric boosted solar is simpler and cheaper to install, and if you're on off-peak electricity it can be very affordable to run. Gas boosted heats faster and can be more responsive in extended cloudy periods. The right choice depends on your existing connections and budget. We're happy to talk through the options — call us on 0448 581 325.
🏠Hydronic Heating
Hydronic heating warms your home by circulating hot water through radiator panels, underfloor pipes, or towel rails. A boiler or heat pump heats the water, and the warmth radiates gently and evenly through your rooms. It's quiet, dust-free (great for allergy sufferers), and creates a really comfortable, consistent warmth. Check out our hydronic heating page for more.
Hydronic describes how heat is delivered through water; efficiency depends on the heat source, temperatures, controls, insulation and building. A gas boiler is not automatically more efficient than a reverse-cycle heat pump. Compare complete systems and their operating conditions rather than the heat-carrying properties of water alone.
Our hydronic service covers repairs and servicing of existing systems. A change to a different heat source needs a separate design assessment; this page does not offer new hydronic installations or heat-pump conversions. Call 0448 581 325 about the fault and existing equipment.
